Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Continuing Education Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry, organized a scientific workshop entitled “Chemical Poisoning and First Aid Measures.” The workshop was presented by Dr. Ahlam Mohammed Farhan, Dr. Nafisa Kadhim Jabbar, and Ms. Ruqayya Hashim Abdul Ghani.
The workshop addressed the concept of chemical poisoning and its various forms resulting from exposure to toxic substances in laboratories and everyday environments. It provided an overview of the primary causes of chemical poisoning, the different routes through which toxic substances enter the human body, and the clinical symptoms associated with various poisoning cases. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of early diagnosis in minimizing complications and improving health outcomes.
Furthermore, the workshop focused on the correct first-aid procedures and the appropriate emergency responses required to reduce the harmful effects of toxic substances before professional medical care becomes available. Participants were introduced to essential first-response practices designed to enhance preparedness and ensure effective management of poisoning incidents.
The workshop also highlighted preventive strategies and stressed the importance of adhering to occupational safety guidelines within laboratories and educational institutions. In addition, it emphasized the promotion of health awareness among students regarding the safe handling, storage, and use of chemical substances, thereby fostering a culture of safety and responsibility.
The workshop concluded by reaffirming the importance of developing students’ and researchers’ competencies in the field of chemical safety. Such skills play a vital role in strengthening health awareness, reducing risks, and improving the safety and quality of both academic and professional environments.
