Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Prof. Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Department of Biology , in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit, organized a scientific workshop entitled “The Role of miRNA in Human Cancer.” The workshop was presented by Dr. Reem Mohammed Ubaid , Dr. Noorhan Subeih from the College of Biotechnology, Al-Nahrain University, and Ms. Tara Aso Tahir.

The workshop aimed to highlight the critical role of microRNA (miRNA) molecules in regulating gene expression within the cell, as well as their direct and indirect involvement in the development of various types of cancer. The session covered several key topics, including an introduction to the concept of miRNA, an explanation of its mechanisms of action within the human genomic system, and a discussion on how these molecules interact with genes that either activate or suppress oncogenic processes.

Moreover, the workshop addressed the latest global research findings regarding the use of miRNA as a reliable biomarker for early cancer diagnosis. It also explored the potential of employing miRNA in the design and development of targeted therapies that can accurately identify and affect cancerous cells, thereby minimizing side effects and enhancing the prospects for recovery.

The event was marked by active scientific participation and dynamic engagement from attendees, who contributed with in-depth questions and scholarly interventions that enriched the discussion and expanded the scientific dialogue surrounding the topic.

In conclusion, the workshop emphasized the importance of supporting and encouraging specialized research in this promising field, and the need to enhance coordination and collaboration among scientific departments and research centers dedicated to cancer studies and gene therapy technologies.
