A workshop entitled “The Psychological, Physical, and Cognitive Harms of Drugs” was organized by the Scientific Affairs Division in collaboration with the Department of Biology, under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim. The workshop was presented by Dr. Shaimaa Ismail Kazim and held at the Rehabilitation and Employment Unit Hall, with the attendance of a number of academic staff, employees, and students.
The workshop provided an explanation of the concept of addiction as a state of physical and psychological dependence on substances that affect the nervous system, leading to alterations in an individual’s behavior, psychological condition, and cognitive abilities, as well as adverse effects on overall health. It also addressed the psychological harms experienced by individuals with substance dependence, such as anxiety, depression, and mood disorders, in addition to the physical damage affecting various body systems. Furthermore, it highlighted cognitive impairments, including reduced concentration and impaired decision-making abilities.
The workshop emphasized the importance of prevention through continuous awareness-raising efforts and strengthening the role of families and educational institutions in protecting young people from substance abuse. It also stressed the necessity of seeking treatment and professional support in cases of exposure or addiction.
The workshop concluded with an open discussion session, allowing participants to raise questions and engage in dialogue, thereby enriching the topic and enhancing its scientific and educational value. This event is part of a series of activities organized by the college aimed at promoting health awareness and strengthening students’ community-oriented knowledge.
