Under the sponsorship of Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, Dean of the College of Science for Women, was held in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit. The workshop, titled “The Green Belt,” was presented by Dr. Sanaria Abbas Al-Alaq, Dr. Arwa Abdul Karim Tawfiq, and Dr. Zainab Omaran Salman.

The workshop aimed to highlight the importance of establishing plant green belts to address the increasing environmental challenges such as desertification, climate change, and the deterioration of plant cover.

The workshop covered the fundamental concepts related to green belts, including definitions, types, and the environmental role these belts play in reducing pollution, regulating temperatures, and increasing biodiversity in urban and peri-urban areas. It also addressed the scientific and technical methods used in establishing these belts, the appropriate plant species for various environments, and considerations for local climatic and soil conditions.

The workshop was distinguished by active participation from the department’s trainees and a number of researchers and environmental enthusiasts. Scientific discussions were held on ways to enhance the role of educational institutions in supporting sustainable afforestation projects and creating green spaces both inside and outside university campuses. The concept of green belts directly contributes to reducing the effects of desertification and land degradation by increasing plant cover and improving soil quality. It also promotes biodiversity by providing suitable habitats for living organisms. These initiatives represent significant practical steps towards achieving a healthy and sustainable environment, combining environmental and scientific aspects, and encouraging the academic community to engage in finding innovative environmental solutions for current and future generations.

This workshop was part of a series of scientific events organized by the college, reflecting its commitment to integrating environmental sciences with field applications to serve the community and achieve Sustainable Development Goal 15, which focuses on “Protecting, restoring, and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, managing forests, combating desertification, halting and reversing land degradation, and halting biodiversity loss.”
