Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Department of Physics, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit, organized a training course entitled “Principles of Radiation Protection”. The course was delivered by Dr. Rowaida Tariq Mahdi, Ms. Sula Sami Hamza, and Ms. Shaimaa Ibrahim Mahmoud.
The course aimed to enhance participants’ awareness of the risks associated with radiation and the methods of protection against it. It covered various key topics, including the fundamental concepts of radiation, its types and sources, the properties of radioactive materials, and the mechanisms through which radiation interacts with living and non-living matter. Additionally, the course addressed radiation doses and their short- and long-term biological effects, as well as international and national laws and regulations governing the handling of radiation and its sources.
Moreover, the course provided practical training in radiation measurement and detection techniques using advanced instruments and technologies. Detailed explanations were given on how to calibrate these devices and utilize them safely and effectively.
This course is part of a series of activities organized by the Department of Physics to promote scientific literacy and raise awareness of the importance of radiation safety, particularly in light of the growing use of nuclear applications in fields such as medicine, industry, energy, and scientific research. It represents a significant step toward preparing qualified personnel capable of addressing contemporary challenges in the field of radiation and its protection, thereby contributing positively to institutional performance quality, environmental safety, and community well-being.
