Overfishing… A Scientific Workshop Highlighting Its Environmental Risks and Ways to Reduce It Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Prof. Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Continuing Education Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Biology, organized a scientific workshop entitled “Overfishing of Fish.” The workshop was presented by Dr. Jinan Shawi Zamil, Dr. Israa Mohsen Jasim, and Ms. Tiybaat Adnan Abdul Wahab.
The workshop addressed the negative impacts of overfishing on biodiversity and aquatic ecosystems, as well as the resulting ecological imbalance and the decline in fish populations in a manner that threatens their sustainability.
It also reviewed the main factors contributing to this phenomenon, including the unregulated use of modern fishing techniques, limited environmental awareness, and non-compliance with laws and regulations governing fishing activities. In addition, the workshop highlighted appropriate scientific and environmental approaches that contribute to mitigating overfishing, presenting practical recommendations aimed at enhancing environmental awareness within society and preserving aquatic resources.
The workshop concluded by emphasizing the importance of developing the skills of students and researchers in the field of aquatic environmental protection, and its role in supporting scientific research and improving the quality of academic studies.
