Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, Dean of the College of Science for Women, the Department of Biology, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit, organized a workshop entitled “Antibiotic Resistance and Its Detection Assay”. The workshop was presented by Dr. Huda Suhail Abd, Dr. Zina Hashim Shihab, and Dr. Rana Ali Hassan.

The aim of the workshop was to shed light on the growing global public health challenge posed by bacterial resistance to antibiotics. It covered both theoretical and practical aspects related to the development of antimicrobial resistance in microorganisms, particularly due to the misuse or overprescription of antibiotics.

The workshop also highlighted the most advanced laboratory techniques used to detect and classify antibiotic resistance. Topics included the mechanisms of antibiotic action, reasons for antibiotic treatment failure in certain cases, and diagnostic methods such as bacterial culturing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

Furthermore, the importance of raising public awareness about the prudent use of antibiotics across human, veterinary, and agricultural medicine was emphasized as a key strategy to combat this issue. The workshop witnessed significant engagement from attendees through questions and discussions about the latest research findings in this field.

It was concluded that organizing such scientific events plays a vital role in enhancing students’ scientific awareness and helps them stay updated with recent advancements in life sciences and scientific research.
