Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Career Development and Employment Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics, organized an outstanding scientific workshop titled “Introduction to Knot Theory.”
The workshop was presented by Dr. Ahmed Zaini Al-Yasseri, Assistant Professor Dr. Nadia Mohammed Jawad, and Assistant Lecturer Dr. Farah Jawad Kazem. They reviewed the concept of knot theory, which is an important branch of topological mathematics. The workshop highlighted the history of the theory, which originated with the German scientist Carl Friedrich in the 19th century before being further developed by William Thomson in its modern form.
The workshop also provided a detailed explanation of knot theory, focusing on the study of closed curves in three-dimensional space and the distortions they can undergo without intersections, making it highly significant in fields like applied mathematics and theoretical physics.
The workshop received great interaction from the students and researchers, where scientific discussions enriched the presented topics and enhanced the attendees’ understanding of one of the most important subjects in modern mathematics.
