Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Continuing Education Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry, organized a scientific workshop entitled “The Dangers of Drugs and Their Most Common Types.” The workshop was presented by Dr. Mona Mahmoud Khudair, Dr. Hamdiya Hatem Jawad, and Ms. Mayami Abdul Aleem Abdul Zahra.

The workshop provided a comprehensive scientific overview of drugs, addressing their definition and classification while highlighting the most prevalent categories, including opioids, stimulants, and hallucinogens. The presenters explained the serious effects of these substances on the nervous system, as well as their detrimental impact on an individual’s physical and mental health.

The workshop also examined the social and economic consequences of drug abuse and its negative repercussions on families and society. Particular emphasis was placed on the role of community awareness in reducing the spread of this phenomenon. Furthermore, the workshop reviewed the principal factors that may lead individuals to substance abuse, such as psychological stress, lack of awareness, and negative peer influence.

The presenters emphasized the importance of prevention through health education, the strengthening of ethical and moral values, and the active role of educational institutions in promoting awareness among students. They highlighted the responsibility of academic institutions in fostering informed attitudes toward the risks associated with drug use and addiction.

The workshop concluded by reaffirming the necessity of increasing public awareness regarding the dangers of drugs and the importance of collective efforts to combat their spread. It emphasized that drug abuse has devastating effects on individuals and communities alike and poses a significant threat to human and social development by undermining public health, social stability, and sustainable progress.
