Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Department of Biology, organized a workshop entitled “The Adverse Effects of Smoking on Body Tissues.” The workshop was presented by Dr. Zainab Karim Khuraybit, Dr. Aven Ramadan Mohsen, and Ms. Nu‘am Haider, and was held in the Hospitality Hall with the attendance of a number of faculty members, staff, and students.
The workshop addressed the harmful effects of smoking on various body tissues, highlighting the toxic substances present in cigarette smoke that lead to cellular damage and the deterioration of vital tissue functions. The lectures also emphasized the direct relationship between smoking and the development of several serious diseases, including lung cancer and cardiovascular diseases, as well as its negative impact on the respiratory and circulatory systems.
With regard to the biological mechanisms through which smoking affects tissues, the workshop explained that smoking reduces oxygen delivery to cells and increases oxidative stress, thereby accelerating the aging process and weakening the immune system. The health risks of passive smoking were also emphasized, noting that it is no less harmful than direct smoking.
The workshop concluded with active engagement and discussion between participants and the presenters, reflecting strong interest in the topic and its public health implications.
