Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Department of Biology, organized a workshop entitled “Human Interactions with Fungi,” presented by Dr. Tayba Hashim Mohammed and Dr. Abeer Mohammed Hussein.

The workshop highlighted the nature of the relationship between humans and fungi. The lectures introduced fungi, their types, and their biological characteristics, in addition to discussing their role in the environment and their various effects on human health. The workshop also reviewed the positive interactions of fungi in the fields of medicine, industry, and food, such as their use in the production of antibiotics and certain food industries. Furthermore, it addressed the negative impacts of some pathogenic species that may cause skin or respiratory diseases, along with methods of prevention and strategies to limit their spread.

The workshop also emphasized the importance of scientific awareness regarding the nature of fungi and appropriate methods of dealing with them, as well as enhancing knowledge of diagnostic and preventive approaches, thereby contributing to raising health and environmental awareness among students and researchers. The workshop concluded by stressing the importance of developing students’ and researchers’ skills in the study of microorganisms and fungi, and their role in supporting scientific research and improving the quality of academic studies.
