Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim , the Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Department of Physics, organized a scientific course entitled “Ionizing Radiation and Protection Measures.” The course was presented by Dr. Ali Dawood Salloum, Ms. Rabab Hussein Ali, and Ms. Huda Abdul Jabbar.
The course aimed to introduce ionizing radiation, its types, and its natural and artificial sources, in addition to clarifying its potential effects on humans and the environment when exposure occurs at unsafe doses. The lecturers also addressed the fundamental principles of radiation protection, including minimizing exposure time, increasing distance from the radiation source, and using appropriate protective measures. Furthermore, they highlighted the importance of devices used for measuring radiation doses and monitoring their levels in laboratories and research centers.
The course also focused on promoting scientific awareness of the peaceful applications of radiation in medical, industrial, and research fields, emphasizing the necessity of adhering to safety procedures and approved guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for students, researchers, and laboratory personnel. The course concluded by stressing the importance of enhancing scientific awareness of the risks associated with ionizing radiation and methods of protection, as well as its role in safeguarding humans and the environment and supporting the safe use of radiation technologies in various scientific fields. It also emphasized the importance of developing the skills of students and researchers in the field of green chemistry and its role in supporting scientific research and promoting safe and environmentally friendly scientific practices.
