Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Prof. Dr. Sameera a Naji Khdim , the Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Department of Mathematical Sciences, organized a scientific workshop entitled “Reading and Interpreting the Results of Statistical Analysis of Biological Data.” The workshop was presented by Mr. Mahmoud Areibi Shumran, Ms. Samaa Mohammed Izzat and Ms. Shaimaa Abbas Jasim.
This workshop was organized in response to the growing need to employ modern statistical methods in the analysis of biological data, particularly in the fields of microbiology, genetics, ecology, and medical research. The workshop addressed several scientific themes focusing on the theoretical foundations of statistical analysis, the mechanisms for selecting appropriate statistical tests according to the nature of the data, as well as explaining how to read statistical outputs generated by specialized software and accurately interpret significance values and levels of statistical significance.
The workshop also highlighted common errors in interpreting statistical results and emphasized the importance of linking statistical significance with biological significance to ensure the derivation of sound scientific conclusions that support the quality of academic research. This activity was conducted within the framework of supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 related to quality education, through the development of analytical and research skills, in addition to its indirect contribution to supporting Goal 3 concerning good health and well-being by improving the quality of biological and medical research based on rigorous statistical analysis.
At the conclusion of the workshop, emphasis was placed on the importance of continuing to organize such scientific activities, which enhance a data-driven research culture and contribute to preparing academic cadres capable of efficiently employing statistical tools across various life science disciplines, in line with the College’s orientation toward academic excellence and community service.
