Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim , and in conjunction with the Iraqi Anti-Drug Week program, the Scientific Affairs Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Physics, organized an awareness workshop entitled “Today’s Dose May Be the Last.” The workshop was presented by Dr. Asmaa Jawad and Ms. Intisar Abbas.
The workshop aimed to introduce participants to the various types of narcotic substances and explain their direct effects on the nervous system, while highlighting the serious health consequences they leave on bodily functions—from the deterioration of cognitive abilities and loss of concentration to the onset of severe illnesses that may, in many cases, lead to death. It also addressed the psychological and social impacts experienced by individuals suffering from addiction, as well as the problems that extend to the family and social environment, ultimately resulting in fractured relationships and the loss of academic and professional prospects.
The workshop further discussed the importance of awareness and caution regarding attempts to lure individuals into drug use, emphasizing the need to strengthen a culture of prevention within the university environment. The event witnessed notable engagement from students through questions and interventions that contributed to deepening their understanding of prevention strategies and appropriate ways to address potential cases within the academic community.
In conclusion, the workshop underscored the importance of building sustainable health awareness that contributes to protecting society from this dangerous scourge. It was also emphasized that organizing such activities aligns with the third Sustainable Development Goal, which focuses on ensuring good health and well-being for all—an objective the college seeks to advance through its ongoing awareness programs.
