Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Prof.Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit at our college organized a workshop entitled “The Risks of Bullying among University Students.” The workshop was presented by Ms. Enas Ahmed Abd from the Information Technology Division and was attended by a number of faculty members, staff, and students. The event was held in Al-Hakim Hall.
The workshop began by defining the concept of bullying as an aggressive behavior practiced by the bully against the victim, whether verbal, physical, or social, with the intention of weakening or deliberately harming the victim. The presenter explained the various types and causes of bullying, including the lack of awareness and upbringing based on respect, the desire for control or attention, jealousy, feelings of inferiority, and the influence of harsh or undisciplined family or school environments.
The lecture also addressed the consequences of bullying on victims, such as:
Loss of self-confidence and feelings of fear or isolation.
Anxiety, depression, and social withdrawal.
A decline in academic performance or a tendency to drop out of studies.
Other serious effects if the phenomenon is not properly addressed.
An open discussion followed, during which participants actively engaged and presented several suggestions for combating bullying, including:
Raising awareness about its dangers to prevent its spread among young people.
Educating children on moral and ethical values that promote balanced and disciplined behavior.
Organizing regular meetings between students and psychological counseling and educational guidance committees to instill positive values and ideals that help counteract this growing phenomenon—particularly in light of the increasing exposure to violent or bullying content through social media, video games, and films.
The workshop concluded by emphasizing the importance of monitoring the content children and adolescents consume and guiding their behavior to foster a safer and more respectful social environment.
