Thesis Discussion

The College of Science for Women at the University of Baghdad discussed a Master’s thesis entitled ” Effect of alkaloids and nano extracts of Datura innoxia leaves on some biological aspects of Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes” submitted by Ayat Munaf Adnan as part of the requirements for obtaining a Master’s degree in Biology / Zoology, under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Sahar Abd Khadhir.

Objectives of the Thesis

The thesis aimed to study the effects of both the alkaloid extract of Datura innoxia leaves and its nanocapsules on the immature stages of Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes, in addition to evaluating their attractant and repellent effects on the adult stage.

Content of the Thesis

The Thesis included a study on the effects of both the alkaloid extract and its nanocapsules on the mortality rates of eggs, fourth-instar larvae, and pupae of Culex quinquefasciatus, as well as their cumulative effects on these stages. The results revealed highly significant differences among the various concentrations, with the nanocapsules outperforming the alkaloid extract by achieving higher mortality rates even at lower concentrations.

recommendations

The thesis recommended investigating the mechanism of action of the nanocapsules derived from Datura innoxia leaves at the cellular level and exploring their effects on the nervous system of mosquitoes. It also suggested formulating nanocapsules from other bioactive compounds found in Datura innoxia and evaluating their impact on mosquitoes. Additionally, the study recommended examining the effects of both the nanocapsules and the alkaloid extract of Datura innoxia leaves on other medically and economically important insects.
