The College of Science for women at the University of Baghdad discussed the master’s thesis entitled (Investigating the Correlation between Heavy Metal Exposure and Asthma Severity Using Advanced Analytical Techniques)

- To determine the serum levels of heavy metals, including Ni, Pb, Cd, and Cr, in asthma patients and healthy individuals.
- To compare heavy metal levels among patients with moderate asthma, severe asthma, and the healthy control group.
- To determine the relationship between heavy metal levels and asthma severity.
This study was conducted at the University of Baghdad / College of Science for Women / Department of Chemistry, in collaboration with Baghdad Teaching Hospital and Al-Zahraa Specialized Center for Allergy and Respiratory Diseases in Baghdad, Iraq, from September to November. The concentrations of heavy metals Pb, Cd, Cr, and Ni were measured using ICP-OES after conventional wet acid digestion of the samples, aiming to investigate the relationship between heavy metal exposure and asthma severity.
- Conduct future studies with larger sample sizes and from different geographical regions to evaluate the relationship between heavy metal exposure and asthma severity.
- Expand future studies to include other heavy metals, such as mercury, arsenic, and manganese, to provide a more comprehensive assessment of the effects of environmental exposure in asthma patients.
- Investigate the relationship between serum heavy metal concentrations and lung function parameters, such as FEV1, FVC, and FEV1/FVC, to assess their association with asthma severity.
- Compare ICP-OES with more advanced analytical techniques, such as ICP-MS, to improve sensitivity and detection limits for heavy metal analysis and assess measurement accuracy.
