Thesis Discussion

The College of Science for Women at the University of Baghdad discussed the doctoral dissertation entitled (Evaluation of MCP-3, NGAL, IGFBP-1, MMP-9 and FABP-4 Levels as Early Predictive Biomarkers of Diabetic Nephropathy in Type 2 Diabetes).

By the student: Halah Bahir Hammadi

Objectives of the thesis

: The study aimed to evaluate several specific biomarkers in the sera of a sample of Iraqi patients with type 2 diabetic nephropathy by estimating the following parameters: FABP-4, MMP-9, IGFBP-1, NGAL, and MCP-3. Other parameters such as blood sugar levels, glycated hemoglobin, urea, creatinine, uric acid, hs-CRP, eGFR levels, and lipid levels were also measured in both the patient and healthy groups, as well as the urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio.

Content of the thesis

The study was conducted at the University of Baghdad, College of Science for Women, Department of Chemistry, and Baghdad Teaching Hospital in the Medical City from February to September 2023. It included measuring blood sugar, levels of urea, creatinine, and uric acid, in addition to lipid levels using spectrophotometry technology. Levels were measured. MCP-3, NGAL, IGFBP-1, MMP-9, FABP-4, and hs-CRP were measured by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technology; the albumin to creatinine ratio was also calculated using FUS 3000 urine analysis strips.

thesis recommendations

The most important recommendations reached by the dissertation are:

  1. Estimating the parameter levels in other diabetic complications diseases.
  2. Studying these factors in diabetic animals after treatment with plant extracts to determine the extent to which they are affected by the plant treatment used.
  3. Determining the level of these factors in patients with coronary artery disease.
  4. Estimating the levels of C3, C4 in the complement system because of its important role in kidney disease development.
