Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, Dean of the College of Women’s Sciences, the Department of Chemistry, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit, organized an awareness workshop entitled “Childhood Obesity and Its Future Implications.” The workshop was presented by Dr. Areej Kamal Asim, Dr. Mayasam Qasim Abdul-Ridha, and Ms. Rafal Salem Mohammed.
The workshop aimed to provide a detailed explanation of the concept of childhood obesity, its causes, consequences, and possible treatments. The speakers emphasized that obesity is no longer considered a mere increase in body weight, but rather a complex health condition resulting from a combination of genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors. These include excessive consumption of high-calorie foods, lack of physical activity, overreliance on electronic devices, as well as psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, and social isolation.
The session highlighted the serious health complications associated with childhood obesity, which may persist into adolescence and adulthood. These complications include early onset of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, musculoskeletal problems, and psychological impacts such as low self-esteem, increased risk of bullying, and depression.
Furthermore, the workshop reviewed recent medical studies linking childhood obesity to an elevated risk of developing chronic diseases in the future. Practical advice was offered on preventive measures, including adopting a balanced diet, encouraging regular physical activity, and limiting screen time.
At the conclusion of the workshop, a discussion session was held where numerous questions were raised regarding the role of families and schools in raising awareness, and the importance of community collaboration in promoting a healthy lifestyle for children from an early age. Emphasis was placed on the significance of addressing health-related societal issues and raising awareness about the importance of preventing diseases associated with dietary habits and daily lifestyle choices, with the aim of building a more health-conscious generation capable of making informed decisions in their daily lives.
