Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Samira Naji Kazem, the Scientific Affairs Unit, in cooperation with the Department of Life Sciences, organized a workshop entitled “Digital Overuse: Technological Progress or Modern-Day Slavery.”
The workshop was held in the Life Sciences Department Hall on Monday, January 12, 2026, and was attended by a number of faculty members, staff, and female students of the department.

The workshop aimed to shed light on the growing role of digital technology in contemporary life amid the rapid pace of technological advancement and global digital transformation. Digital technology has become an integral part of daily life requirements in the fields of education, scientific research, social communication, and skills development.

The workshop was delivered by Professor Dr. Huda Suhail Abd and Assistant Professor Dr. Rana Ali Hassan, who addressed the concept of digital overuse and its various dimensions. They explained the difference between the positive use of technology as a tool for progress and knowledge, and excessive use, which may lead to unhealthy dependence with negative effects on mental and physical health, social relationships, as well as academic and professional performance.

The workshop also discussed the behavioral and cognitive effects of excessive use of smart devices and social media platforms, emphasizing the importance of achieving digital balance, raising awareness of time management, and utilizing technology consciously in a way that serves educational and scientific goals.

At the conclusion of the workshop, emphasis was placed on the necessity of spreading awareness of digital culture and encouraging initiatives that contribute to the positive and responsible use of modern technology, in line with global development while preserving the health of individuals and society.
