Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, Dean of the College of Science for Women, the Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the relevant department, organized a scientific workshop entitled “Essential Materials for Handicrafts.” The workshop was presented by Assist. Prof. Mona Mahdi Saleh, Dr. Mirvat Kadhim Arhima, and Ms. Shaimaa Ibrahim Mahmoud. It was attended by a number of female students and individuals interested in handicrafts and creative activities.
The workshop provided a comprehensive overview of the principal materials used in handicrafts, introducing the main types of raw materials, including fabrics, threads, beads, wood, and recycled materials. The characteristics of each material were explained, along with the criteria for selecting the most appropriate material according to the type and requirements of the intended handicraft.
The workshop also addressed the supporting tools that contribute to achieving precision and quality in handicraft production, including tools for cutting, shaping, and bonding. In addition, it explained methods of combining different materials to create innovative and contemporary designs.
Particular emphasis was placed on developing the participants’ creative skills by presenting practical examples of simple handicraft products that could be further developed into small-scale projects. Such activities contribute to fostering an entrepreneurial spirit and encouraging self-employment. The workshop also highlighted the importance of making effective use of available resources and transforming them into products with aesthetic and functional value.
The workshop concluded by emphasizing the importance of developing the skills of students and researchers in the field of handicrafts and highlighting their role in promoting innovation and enhancing artistic capabilities. Such skills can contribute to supporting small-scale enterprises and fostering economic sustainability.
