Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim , the workshop was held on Sunday, March 8, 2026, in Abdul Hakim Hall. The workshop was presented by Dr. Sameea Juma Khumas, Dr. Inaam Fadel Mousa, and Dr. Mayasem Qasim Abdul-Ridha, and was attended by a number of faculty members, staff, and students of the college.

The workshop aimed to introduce the most important applications of organic chemistry and its role in addressing environmental problems and pollution. Organic chemistry is considered one of the key branches of chemical sciences concerned with the study of carbon-containing compounds, their reactions, and various properties, in addition to their wide applications in industrial, medical, and environmental fields. The workshop addressed the role of organic compounds in understanding sources of environmental pollution, such as pollutants resulting from industrial activities, fossil fuel combustion, agricultural pesticides, and industrial detergents. It also discussed persistent organic pollutants, which are characterized by their resistance to environmental degradation and their ability to accumulate in soil, water, and living organisms, posing risks to human health and the environment.

Furthermore, the workshop highlighted the most important chemical techniques used to detect organic pollutants in air, water, and soil, which assist in accurately identifying the type and concentration of pollutants. It also shed light on the role of organic chemistry in developing environmentally friendly materials and processes that contribute to reducing pollution, such as designing biodegradable compounds, using green solvents, and developing chemical treatment technologies for pollutant removal. The workshop concluded with a scientific discussion with attendees, emphasizing the importance of employing knowledge in organic chemistry to find scientific solutions to contemporary environmental problems and to enhance environmental awareness among students and researchers.
