Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim , the Scientific Affairs Unit organized an awareness workshop entitled “Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)”, presented by Dr. Nadia Mohammed Jawad and Dr. Farah Jawad Kazem.
The workshop aimed to enhance awareness of mental health within the university community. It presented an overview of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as a psychological condition that may affect individuals following exposure to a traumatic event or severe experience, such as serious accidents, the loss of a loved one, natural disasters, or other violent and distressing situations. The workshop addressed the most prominent symptoms associated with the disorder, which may include recurrent re-experiencing of the traumatic event, nightmares, persistent anxiety, sleep disturbances, avoidance of situations or places linked to the trauma, heightened tension, and increased irritability.
The presenters also highlighted the psychological and social consequences that may result if the disorder is not properly diagnosed or managed according to sound scientific principles. In addition, the workshop discussed mechanisms of psychological support and preventive strategies, emphasizing the importance of early intervention, seeking professional psychological counseling, and the role of families and educational institutions in supporting psychologically affected individuals. The necessity of promoting a culture of mental health awareness and reducing the social stigma associated with consulting mental health professionals was also underscored.
The workshop concluded with an open discussion during which numerous questions and inquiries were raised, enriching the dialogue and contributing to a deeper understanding of the nature of the disorder and effective ways of addressing it within both university and community settings.
