Under the patronage of the respected Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim , the Scientific Affairs Division, in cooperation with the Department of Mathematics, organized a workshop entitled “Plastics and Our Health.” The workshop was presented by Ms. Nidal Mohsen Abd Al-Ameer and Ms. Intisar Haitham Qasim, and was attended by a number of female faculty members, staff, and students.

The workshop addressed plastics as one of the most widely used materials in daily life, highlighting their various types, chemical and physical properties, and manufacturing processes. It also outlined the potential health risks associated with improper use, particularly the leakage of certain harmful chemical compounds into food and beverages when plastic containers are exposed to heat or reused unsafely. In addition, the presenters discussed the identification symbols printed on plastic products and explained their scientific significance, with the aim of raising participants’ awareness of how to select safe materials for everyday use.

The workshop further examined the environmental impacts resulting from the continuous accumulation of plastic waste and its role in soil and water pollution, as well as its indirect effects on human health. Emphasis was placed on the importance of promoting a culture of conscious consumption, reducing unnecessary plastic use, and encouraging environmentally friendly alternatives.

The session witnessed notable interaction from attendees through questions and scientific discussions that enriched the dialogue and contributed to enhancing health and environmental awareness among participants, in line with the college’s objectives of supporting scientific culture and consolidating sound concepts within the academic community. The workshop concluded by emphasizing the importance of strengthening health awareness among students and researchers regarding the safe use of plastic materials, and their role in reducing health and environmental risks while supporting sound scientific practices.
