Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Prof. Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Continuing Education Unit organized a workshop entitled “Effective Tricks for Learning English through YouTube Channels.” The workshop was presented by Assistant Ms. Huda Qasim Hamza and Ms. Lina Nasser Dheyaa , and was held in the Guest Hall, with the attendance of a number of faculty members, staff, and female students of the College.
The workshop aimed to develop students’ linguistic skills and to guide them toward the optimal use of modern technology by transforming YouTube from a medium of entertainment into a comprehensive linguistic laboratory that contributes to enhancing English language learning. It highlighted practical approaches to overcoming the fear of speaking English and addressed the issue of “passive listening” experienced by many learners. In addition, the workshop presented a set of effective learning strategies, including selecting channels appropriate to the learner’s level and interests; the intelligent use of subtitles by starting with English subtitles and gradually discontinuing them while avoiding Arabic subtitles; and employing shadowing techniques—repeating after the speaker with the same tone and speed—to improve pronunciation.
The workshop also emphasized the importance of learning vocabulary in context by memorizing complete sentences and expressions rather than isolated words. Learners were encouraged to practice self-speaking by describing daily routines or summarizing viewed content aloud, recording their voices and comparing them with correct pronunciation to identify and correct errors, and writing a single sentence summarizing the benefit of each video to ensure comprehension.
In conclusion, the presenters stressed that consistency in language learning and skill development is more important than quantity. They recommended selecting only two or three methods and adhering to them, rather than attempting to apply all strategies simultaneously. The workshop was well received and witnessed notable engagement from attendees through discussions and interventions that enriched its themes.
