Master’s Discussion
The College of Science for Women at the University of Baghdad examined a master’s thesis entitled “Evaluation of Some Immunological and Hormonal Parameters in Electronic Cigarette Male Smokers in Wasit Governerate.”, presented by the postgraduate student Bushra Basheer Khudhair, as a requirement for the degree of Master of Science in Biology/Microbiology. The study was supervised by Dr. Talib Abdullah Huessein.
The thesis/ The study aimed to evaluate the biological effects of e-cigarettes through three main axes: immunological, hormonal, and blood in young people. An important scientific gap was addressed in the popular claim that e-cigarettes are a safe alternative to traditional smoking, through the provision of laboratory and statistical evidence showing the true impact of the e-cigarette spray on the biobalance and body functions.
The thesis also includes a significant increase in the level of Interleukin-6 (IL-6), a pro-inflammatory cytokine. A significant decrease in the level of Interleukin-10 (IL-10), an anti-inflammatory cytokine. Significant alterations in some hematological parameters. Lower testosterone levels among e-cigarette users compared with non-smokers.
- The thesis recommended Future studies should include larger samples and longer exposure periods to confirm the observed immunological and hematological alterations among e- cigarette smokers. Additional biomarkers such as TNF -α , IL -1 β, and oxidative stress indicators are recommended to clarify the inflammatory mechanisms involved.Follow-up studies are needed to determine whether these physiological changes are reversible after smoking cessation
