Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Prof. Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Scientific Affairs Division, in cooperation with the Department of Mathematics, organized a workshop entitled “World Hand Hygiene Day” in the College Reception Hall, with the attendance of a number of faculty members and staff.
The workshop was delivered by Assistant Prof. Dr. Nadia Mohammed Jawad Ibrahim, Dr. Farah Jawad Kadhim, and Dr. Ali Musaddaq Dalfi. The workshop addressed the importance of hand hygiene and its effective role in preventing diseases and reducing the transmission of infections within educational institutions and the community at large.
The workshop aimed to raise awareness of World Hand Hygiene Day as a global occasion that highlights one of the most important health practices contributing to the promotion of public health and the protection of individuals. It also emphasized that hygiene constitutes a fundamental aspect of individual and community life, and that adherence to sound health practices contributes to building a healthier society.
The workshop included an explanation of proper handwashing techniques in accordance with approved health guidelines, as well as clarification of the situations in which hands should be washed or disinfected. It further highlighted the role of these practices in reducing the spread of infectious diseases. The workshop emphasized that washing hands with soap and water is among the most effective methods for removing dirt and germs and reducing the transmission of infection. It also clarified that the use of hand sanitizers alone cannot replace handwashing in all circumstances, particularly when hands are visibly soiled, as washing with soap and water is more effective in removing contaminants and many types of microorganisms.
The organization of this workshop is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, through promoting health awareness and disease prevention; Goal 4: Quality Education, through disseminating knowledge and health education among members of the university community; and Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, by emphasizing the importance of handwashing and adherence to proper hygiene practices to safeguard public health and reduce the spread of infection.
The lecturers emphasized the importance of promoting health awareness and strengthening preventive health culture within the community, given its vital role in protecting public health and reducing the spread of diseases. They noted that adopting healthy habits begins with simple daily practices, foremost among them being proper handwashing.
