Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, Dean of the College of Science for Women, the Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Department of Chemistry, organized a workshop entitled “HPLC Separation Optimization: Mastering Factors Affecting Resolution and Retention Time.” The workshop was held on Sunday, May 24, 2026, in Abdul Hakim Hall and attended by a number of faculty members and postgraduate students. It was presented by Dr. Maha Kadhim Salman and Ms. Thamader Ali Mahmoud.
The workshop aimed to provide a comprehensive explanation of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), one of the most important modern techniques employed in chemical separation and analytical processes due to its high accuracy and efficiency in the analysis of various chemical compounds.
Particular emphasis was placed on the key factors affecting separation resolution and retention time, including the type of column used, the composition of the mobile phase, flow rate, temperature, and the influence of sample characteristics on the accuracy of laboratory results. The workshop also explained scientifically optimized approaches for improving separation conditions and obtaining accurate and reliable analytical results.
The workshop included a review of the practical applications of HPLC across several fields, in addition to a discussion of the most common challenges encountered by researchers during separation processes and appropriate approaches for addressing them.
The workshop witnessed active interaction between the participants and the organizers, who emphasized the importance of conducting such scientific activities in developing laboratory skills and strengthening the research and academic competencies of students and researchers.
The workshop also contributed to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It supported SDG 4 (Quality Education) by enhancing the scientific and research skills of students and researchers; SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by highlighting analytical techniques used in medical and pharmaceutical applications; and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) through promoting the use of modern laboratory technologies and advancing scientific research and innovation in the applied sciences.
