Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, Dean of the College of Science for Women, the Continuing Education Unit organized a workshop entitled “Dynamic vs. Static: Detecting Community Structures in Complex Networks.”
The workshop was held in Abdul Hakim Hall and attended by a number of faculty members, staff, and female students. It was presented by Ms. Hiba Samir Saeed, Ms. Lubna Zuhair Mohammed, and Ms. Inas Abdul-Muttalib Zaidan.
The workshop addressed the concept of complex networks and the mechanisms used to analyze them, highlighting the distinction between static and dynamic networks. It also explained methods for detecting community structures within these networks based on the nature of the relationships and connections among their various components.
The workshop further introduced several fundamental concepts in network science. It explained that nodes represent the basic entities or elements within a network, while relations represent the links and connections between these nodes. Communities, meanwhile, refer to groups of interconnected nodes characterized by stronger relationships among their members than those observed in other parts of the network.
The workshop also addressed the concepts of cost, referring to the computational effort, resources, or expense required to analyze networks, and noise, referring to inaccurate or irrelevant data that may affect the results and accuracy of network analysis.
In addition, the workshop examined the concept of a “single snapshot,” which refers to analyzing a network at a specific point in time without tracking the changes that occur over time. This approach contrasts with the analysis of dynamic networks, which involves monitoring the evolution of relationships and communities and examining the impact of time on the structure and behavior of the network.
The workshop aimed to enhance scientific knowledge in the field of complex network analysis and to demonstrate its significance across a wide range of applications. It is noteworthy that the workshop’s themes are aligned with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4, which focuses on quality education through the promotion of knowledge and scientific research, and SDG 9, concerning industry, innovation, and infrastructure through the advancement of modern technologies and data analysis.
The workshop witnessed notable engagement and interaction between the participants and the organizers of the event.
