The Directorate of Environmental Awareness and Media commended the University of Baghdad’s project to restore biodiversity and conserve vegetation cover within the university campus, describing the initiative as a successful outcome of collaborative and awareness-raising efforts among government sectors aimed at promoting sustainability and addressing environmental challenges.
The decision was implemented through a directive issued by the University President, Dr. Alaa Abdul-Hassan Atiya, in accordance with the resolutions adopted by the University Council during its seventeenth session of the 2025–2026 academic year. The directive prohibits any practices that may adversely affect green spaces and requires faculty members, employees, students, and residents of university housing complexes to comply with environmental regulations, with legal measures to be taken against violators.
The project aims to transform the university campus into an environmental and academic model that balances scientific development with the conservation of natural resources. The initiative also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to quality education, sustainable cities and communities, life on land, and global and local partnerships.
