The College of Science for Women, University of Baghdad, held the discussion of the Master’s thesis entitled: “A Comparative Study Between the Effects of Laser and Cold Plasma on Salvia officinalis Extract and Its Medical Applications.”Submitted by: Noor Hamid Mahdi
Objectives of the Thesis
- The thesis aimed to investigate the effects of pulsed laser and cold plasma on Salvia officinalis with respect to its physical, optical, and biological properties. Iron oxide was added to the aqueous extract to evaluate its effect on the biological activity of Salvia officinalis and its potential as an antibacterial agent against bacteria responsible for oral diseases.
Content of the Thesis
The thesis also involved the green synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe₂O₃) using an environmentally friendly, low-cost, and non-toxic method. The antibacterial activity of the synthesized nanoparticles was evaluated against Gram-positive bacteria (Streptococcus mutans) and Gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas), which are associated with oral diseases.
Recommendation of the Thesis
- The study concluded that the green synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles using Salvia officinalis extract is an effective and environmentally friendly approach. Furthermore, plasma and laser treatments improved the physical and chemical properties of the synthesized nanoparticles and enhanced their antibacterial activity. Plasma treatment showed superior performance, achieving the best overall results. These findings highlight the promising potential of these nanoparticles for future biological and medical applications.
