Master’s Discussion
The College of Science for women at the University of Baghdad discussed the master’s thesis entitled(An Evaluation of serum syndecan 2,3 Levels and their association with oxidative stress and heart disease Risk in type 2 diabetic mellitus)

Objectives of the Thesis
- To assess levels of syndican-2 and syndican-3 in individuals with(T2DM)
- To determine level of syndican-2 and syndican-3 in patemt T2DM with complication
- To assess the relationship between syndican-2 and syndican-3 and various biochemical markers .
Content of the Thesis
- The study was conducted at the Department of Chemistry, College of Science for Women, University of Baghdad, and Al-Yarmouk Teaching Hospital, Iraq, from September to October 2025. Serum levels of Syndecan-2 and Syndecan-3 were measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique with a Human Reader HS. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was measured using a Siemens Healthineers analyzer. In addition, lipid profile parameters, including total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and fasting blood glucose (FBG), were measured using a Huma Reader HS UV-Vis spectrophotometer (USA).
Recommendation of the Thesis
- Measure levels of Syndecan-2 and Syndecan-3 as potential biomarkers for early endothelial damage in T2DM patients.
- Stress on strict glycemic control especially HbA1c and a proper lipid management to decrease the endothelial glycocalyx damage and shed syndecans
- To perform larger multicenter studies with a more diverse population to set reference ranges and cut-off values for Syndecan biomarkers.
- Evaluate different glucose-lowering and lipid-lowering drugs on the levels of Syndecan and their impact on endothelial glycocalyx integrity.
- Patients with T2DM should be encouraged to have a healthy lifestyle to reduce oxidative stress and diabetes related complications; including regular exercise and a balanced diet.
6.More research is required to understand the relationship between Syndecan biomarkers and the occurrence of chronic complications of diabetes such as cardiovascular and renal diseases.
