The College of Science for Women at the University of Baghdad held a Master’s thesis defense titled: Synthesis of Aromatic and Aliphatic Methacrylate Monomers and Their Polymers for Industrial and Biomedical Applications by the student: Fatima hekmat asal

Objectives of the Thesis

The significance of this study lies in the development of smart polymeric materials based on aliphatic (DMA), aromatic (HBM), and acrylamide (AAM) monomers for efficient oil–water separation and drug delivery applications. By synthesizing copolymers and coating them onto metal meshes, the study demonstrated high separation efficiency, particularly when using meshes with larger pore sizes (1000 microns). The research also highlighted how variations in polymer composition and crosslinking density significantly influence the mechanical, swelling, and separation properties of the materials. Furthermore, HBM-containing copolymers showed excellent capabilities for loading and releasing the drug ciprofloxacin, indicating their potential for use in biomedical applications such as controlled drug delivery systems.

Content of the master's thesis

The study was conducted at the University of Baghdad, College of Science for Women, Department of Chemistry. The study included: (Infrared spectroscopy, UV-Visible spectroscopy, Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Thermal properties, Mechanical properties).

Main Recommendations of the Thesis:

  1. To synthesis and characterize the monomers (hydroxybenzyl methacrylate) and (decyl methacrylate).

2- To synthesis and characterize the copolymers (hydroxybenzyl methacrylate-co-acrylamide) and (decyl methacrylate-co-acrylamide) with different composition of monomers at high conversion.

3- To synthesis the copolymers with different composition of cross-linker

4- To Study the thermal and mechanical properties of the prepared polymers.

4- To study the performers of polymer ((hydroxybenzyl methacrylate-co-acrylamide) as drag carries.

6- To Evaluate the performance of polymer (decyl methacrylate-co-acrylamide) as oil/water separator.
