Master’s Discussion

The College of Science for Women, Department of Physics, University of Baghdad, discussed the Master thesis entitled “Effect of the Laser Induced Plasma on the Surface Properties of Titanium Alloy for Medical Applications”, submitted by )Fatima Falah Hassan(.

Objectives of the Thesis
  1. The thesis aimed to modify the surface of the Ti6Al4V alloy using laser induced plasma in order to improve its mechanical and surface properties. This results in optimal standards for corrosion resistance, hardness, wettability, and antibacterial properties, thereby enhancing their use in medical applications, particularly in dental and joint implants
Content of the Thesis
  1. The thesis also included an investigation of Ti6Al4V alloy used in medical implants through laser-induced plasma treatment. Plasma characterization was carried out using Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES). Furthermore, the alloy was characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX). In addition, corrosion resistance, hardness, wettability, biocompatibility, and antibacterial activity tests were performed.
Thesis recommendations
  1. The study concluded that the use of laser-induced plasma significantly improved the surface properties of the Ti6Al4V alloy by enhancing its corrosion resistance, increasing its hardness, improving its wettability, and strengthening its antibacterial properties. These improvements make the alloy more suitable for medical applications, particularly dental and orthopedic implants.Accordingly, the researcher (Fatima Falah Hassan) was awarded the Master of Science degree in Physics (Plasma Physics) with the grade of Excellent.
