Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, Dean of the College of Science for Women, the Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Department of Physics, organized a scientific workshop entitled “The Scientific Foundations of Manufacturing and Shaping Artistic Works and Accessories Using Epoxy Resin.” The workshop was presented by Dr. Samara Jassim Mohammed and Ms. Huda Mohammed Jaafar Ali, with the participation of a number of faculty members and female students of the College.
The workshop addressed the scientific foundations of epoxy resin, focusing on its chemical composition and physical properties that enable it to be shaped and subsequently transformed into a solid material through a chemical reaction. The workshop also explained the curing mechanism and the factors affecting it, including temperature, mixing ratios, and curing time.
In addition, the workshop reviewed the principal tools and materials used in the production of artistic works and accessories, providing a detailed explanation of the various stages of production, beginning with mold preparation, followed by casting, coloring, and the incorporation of aesthetic effects, and concluding with the final finishing stage.
The workshop also addressed the practical applications of epoxy resin in producing a variety of artistic pieces and accessories, emphasizing the creative possibilities through which students can integrate scientific knowledge with artistic expression to develop innovative designs. It further highlighted the importance of this field in developing practical and handicraft skills and creating opportunities for small-scale entrepreneurial projects.
The workshop concluded by emphasizing the importance of developing the skills of students and researchers in utilizing scientific materials in artistic applications, highlighting their role in fostering creativity, enhancing practical capabilities, and promoting integration between scientific knowledge and practical applications.
