Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Continuing Education Unit, in collaboration with the Departments of Physics and Mathematics, organized a training course entitled “Exploring Advanced Excel Features for Creating Scientific Graphs.” The course was presented by Dr. Tasneem Hassan Mahmood, Dr. Asmaa Abdul Hassan Mohammed, and Ms. Muna Mahdi Saleh. It was held in Abdul Hakeem Hall and attended by a number of faculty members, staff, and students.

The course aimed to introduce participants to the concept of scientific graphing as an accurate visual representation of numerical data and experimental results. Scientific graphs present data using visual elements such as bars in bar charts, lines in line graphs, and segments in pie charts, thereby facilitating the interpretation of large datasets and illustrating the relationships among variables.

The presenters explained that one of the principal advantages of graphical representation is its ability to communicate information more efficiently than raw numerical data. Scientific graphs enable users to identify patterns and trends quickly and are widely employed across various scientific and academic disciplines. They may be created manually or, more commonly, through computer-based graphing software such as Microsoft Excel.

The lectures highlighted the major benefits of using scientific graphs, emphasizing that the human brain processes visual information more rapidly than text. Graphical representations facilitate trend and pattern analysis, simplify comparisons among different datasets through clear visual presentation, summarize large volumes of information by emphasizing key findings, and enhance the effectiveness of presentations and reports by making them more persuasive and accessible.

The course also provided a detailed explanation of several types of scientific graphs, including histograms, bar charts, pie charts, and other advanced graph formats such as bubble charts, polar area charts, and radar charts. The training concluded with active engagement and constructive discussions between the participants and the instructors, reflecting the attendees’ strong interest in the practical applications of scientific data visualization.
