Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Department of Biology, organized a scientific workshop entitled “The Role of Algae in Water Purification.” The workshop was presented by Ms. Taybat Adnan Wahab, r Dr. Saja Hassan, and Dr. Basma Ali.

The workshop addressed the significance of algae as an effective biological tool for water treatment and purification from various contaminants. Algae possess a remarkable capacity to absorb heavy metals and toxic substances, in addition to their role in reducing organic pollutants and improving overall water quality.

Furthermore, the workshop reviewed the biological mechanisms through which algae contribute to water purification processes, as well as the practical applications of algae-based technologies in water treatment facilities. Particular emphasis was placed on their role in environmental protection and the promotion of environmental sustainability through the reduction of water pollution.

The presenters also discussed the major challenges associated with the use of algae in water treatment systems and proposed scientific solutions aimed at enhancing their efficiency and effectiveness in purification processes.

The workshop concluded by emphasizing the importance of developing the skills of students and researchers in the field of environmental biotechnology and highlighting its contribution to supporting scientific research and improving the quality of academic and scientific studies.
