Under the patronage of the respected Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khidm, the Continuing Education Unit, in collaboration with the concerned department, organized a scientific workshop entitled “An Introduction to Nuclear Concepts.” The workshop was presented by Dr. Ali Dawood Salloum, Ms. Huda Abdul Jabbar Hussein, and Dr. Alaa Mustafa Dhiban, in the presence of the Head of the Department of Physics, Assistant Professor Dr. Haider Yahya Hammoud, along with a number of faculty members and staff of the college.
The workshop aimed to provide a comprehensive scientific presentation on the fundamentals of nuclear concepts. The speakers addressed the basic structure of the atom and its components—protons, neutrons, and electrons—along with an explanation of the nature of nuclear forces that bind the nucleus. In addition, various types of nuclear radiation and their properties were discussed.
The workshop also covered nuclear reactions, including fission and fusion processes, highlighting their applications across multiple fields such as energy, medicine, and industry. Furthermore, it addressed aspects related to radiation protection and the key measures adopted to minimize associated risks.
The workshop concluded by emphasizing the importance of developing students’ and researchers’ skills in the field of nuclear sciences, given their vital role in supporting scientific research and enhancing the quality of academic studies.
