About the Department of Biology

Since its establishment, the Department of Biology has enjoyed a distinguished scientific reputation within the University of Baghdad. In general, the department devotes the possibilities to maintaining the highest scientific level, as the department provides a broad study and research program within the field of biology to provide scientific opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. Every year, many original scientific research are carried out in various fields of biology. About 85 members belong to the department, most of whom hold master’s and doctoral degrees. The members of the Department of biology are characterized by their high ambition and aspiration to raise the scientific level to the global level. In this regard, a number of employees of the department are currently continuing their studies outside Iraq and will accompany the department after completing the study requirements. At the level of preliminary studies, the department provides the opportunity to obtain a bachelor’s degree in biology by giving practical and theoretical lessons, as well as scientific research in almost all branches of biology, as the subjects taught during the four academic years qualify graduates to work as biologists wherever they are needed in the fields of work. The number of new students admitted to the department has increased over the past years.

Providing the community with distinguished educated graduates to work in the fields of research, education, health, environmental protection and sustainability, and the leadership of civil society and able to keep pace with the developments of the times, enhance the status of women as an essential component in society and rid them of the restrictions of backward legacies that hinder their aspirations.

The Department of Biology at the College of Science for Women seeks to prepare qualified leaders with skills that keep pace with scientific development.

Department Objectives

Contribute to the development of scientific research in Iraq by conducting scientific research and contributing to solving the problems of state institutions related to the specialization of the department.

Preparing specialists in the fields of Biology with a high scientific qualification (master’s and doctorate) and scientific experience that helps them solve biological problems and provide scientific advice.

Understand the biological facts and keep informed of rapid developments in biological and acquire skills that lead to preparing students towards different career paths of biology.

Preparing qualified graduates to work in various fields of biology and occupying positions qualified to occupy them with high efficiency in society and have the ability to overcome problems.

Undergraduate StudiesB.S. DEGREE PROGRAMS

The B.S. degree in chemistry prepares students for further studies in chemistry, biochemistry, or health-related disciplines.

Postgraduate StudiesM.S. AND PH.D. DEGREE PROGRAMS

     The first two years of the program lead to a M.Sc. degree, and include coursework and other formal requirements in addition to research with one or more faculty members.

       The Ph.D. degree is designed to prepare students for a career in scientific research with the tools they need to succeed: detailed knowledge, ability to apply that knowledge, independent thought, communication skills, teamwork, teaching, and safety.
