Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Department of Chemistry, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit, held a workshop entitled “The Most Important Examinations for Pregnant Women.” The workshop was presented by Ms. Suha Nasr Fadel, Ms. Muna Samir Hadi, and Chemist Yasmeen Hameed Hilal. It was attended by a number of faculty members and staff of the college.
The aim of the workshop was to highlight the most essential medical examinations for pregnant women. It addressed the importance of thyroid function testing and its impact on human activity. Any thyroid dysfunction may lead to general weakness, increased heart rate, loss of appetite, and brittleness of hair and nails in pregnant women.
The workshop emphasized that thyroid testing should be conducted after the age of 35 and repeated every five years. It also highlighted the necessity of iron and ferritin testing for human health, as iron plays a key role in the formation of hemoglobin, which is essential for red blood cells. Iron deficiency can result in headaches, dizziness, fatigue, exhaustion, hair loss, and other symptoms.
Additionally, the workshop recommended a range of other examinations such as vitamin D, calcium, and vitamin C tests. It stressed the importance of proper nutrition and overall health care for pregnant women, as these factors directly affect the health and well-being of the child.
