The Department of Chemistry, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit and under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women, Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, organized a workshop entitled “The Role of Chemistry in the Preparation of Pharmaceutical Drugs”. The workshop was delivered by Ms. Wissam Abdul Razzaq Mahmoud, Dr. Zainab Hussein Fadhil, and Ms. Tamadur Ali Mahmoud. It was attended by a number of faculty members, staff, and students from the department.
The workshop commenced with an explanation of the importance of chemistry in the pharmaceutical industry. It emphasized the fundamental role of organic chemistry in this field, as organic compounds are key components of medications. The data obtained from studies on these compounds are used to manufacture new drugs and improve existing ones.
The workshop included an in-depth discussion of the central role chemistry plays in the field of medicine. Since therapeutic and preventive drugs are made from chemical substances, knowledge of chemistry is crucial for healthcare professionals such as doctors, nurses, and pharmacists. Chemistry also plays a significant role in medical systems, diagnostics, and understanding disease mechanisms, thereby contributing to the provision of accurate medical care to patients.
Additionally, the workshop addressed several applications of chemistry in medical treatments. These include understanding the actual composition of drugs, analyzing their chemical nature and properties, predicting drug interactions in the body, sterilization and sanitation, disease diagnosis, drug distribution within the body, reducing toxicity, enhancing drug efficacy, discovering new medications, studying disease mechanisms, and understanding how drugs function within the body.
All of these points were thoroughly explained by the workshop presenters.
