Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, Dean of the College of Science for Women, the Continuing Education Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry, organized a scientific workshop titled “General Methods for Disposing of Chemical Waste,” presented by Dr. Ahlam Mohammed Farhan, Dr. Nafisa Jabar Khdim, and Dr. Mona Sarhan Sandou.
The workshop aimed to highlight the importance of following proper methods when dealing with chemical waste, providing practical guidelines on how to classify, store, and dispose of materials safely to protect environmental health and public safety. It emphasized the necessity of adhering to precise procedures and strict standards to avoid any harm that may arise from improper disposal of these substances. The disposal of chemical waste is considered an essential component of safety measures that must be followed in chemical laboratories, in accordance with the environmental and health regulations in place at the national or institutional level.
Chemical waste is classified based on its type and properties, such as flammable materials, toxic substances, or those that react with other materials. These wastes are stored in special containers that bear clear warning labels indicating the type of chemical inside, with these containers being designated according to the chemical’s nature and level of hazard. Flammable chemicals or those posing an environmental risk are transferred to specialized facilities for the treatment of hazardous materials. On the other hand, substances that can be safely disposed of through the sewage system are treated according to environmental standards before disposal.
Moreover, particular care must be taken when handling chemicals that may cause water or soil contamination. These materials
