Under the patronage of Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, Dean of the College of Science for Women, the Educational Guidance and Psychological Counseling Unit, in collaboration with the Computer Science Department, organized a workshop for the department’s students titled “The Role of the University Professor in Developing University and Social Values among Students.”
The workshop was attended by Mrs. Alaa Talib, the college librarian, as well as a number of students from the department, and was held in the Smart Hall. The workshop was presented by Dr. Auras Khalid Hamid, Dr. Amal Sufih Ajarash, and Dr. Safa Sami Abdul Jabar, the head of the Rehabilitation and Employment Unit.
The workshop aimed to familiarize students with university values and traditions, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect between students and professors, as well as the preservation of public property at the college, which is considered a trust for everyone. The workshop also stressed the commitment to principles when interacting with others, such as refraining from interfering in others’ affairs, respecting privacy, avoiding gossip and spreading rumors, and respecting appointments. It also encouraged students to offer help whenever possible to anyone in need of advice or support when facing certain situations. University students are distinguished by their culture and elevated standards, which are reflected in their behavior toward family and society.
The workshop also addressed the importance of balancing university values with societal values. Students must find a balance between adhering to university values and respecting social norms, especially since the university serves as a microcosm reflecting the larger society. Additionally, it emphasized the importance of understanding the general principles of life, including self-education and personal development through learning from the experiences of others, drawing lessons from situations and behaviors, avoiding mistakes, maintaining composure, and having the courage to face and correct mistakes. It also encouraged avoiding hasty judgments of others, being forgiving, and offering apologies when wrong. Apologizing, which some may view as a weakness, is in fact a characteristic of individuals with high moral standards, deserving of respect and admiration, and who serve as role models for others.
The workshop was an interactive session between the students and the lecturers, who thanked the attendees for their active participation and clear engagement. They wished all the students a bright future and hoped that they would fulfill their mission in spreading knowledge, values, and service to society.
