Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, Dean of the College of Science for Women, the Department of Mathematics, in collaboration with the Unit for Educational Counseling and Psychological Guidance, organized an awareness workshop titled “Drugs: Causes, Prevention, and Treatment of Addiction.” The workshop was presented by a psychiatrist Dr. Ithar Qusi Hamid, Dr. Farah Jawad Khdim and Dr. Dhikra Abdul Latif.
Workshop aimed to shed light on the phenomenon of addiction, which is both an organic disease and a psychological and behavioral disorder, as well as its negative impacts on all aspects of individual and social life. Drugs represent a societal and economic scourge that creates a crisis deeply affecting individuals and communities. Addressing this issue becomes increasingly difficult if not tackled seriously, requiring effective solutions implemented at an early stage.
The workshop outlined the types of drugs that are commonly spread, along with their cultivation, manufacturing, and marketing methods. It also addressed the factors that may lead individuals to use and become addicted to drugs, including various social, psychological, and environmental factors, as well as the desire to escape from life’s pressures. Furthermore, the negative effects of addiction on mental and physical health were discussed.
It explored treatment methods employed by doctors and specialists, such as pharmacological and psychological therapies. Emphasis was placed on the importance of psychological and moral support for addicts from their families and friends, as well as the role of the surrounding environment in providing appropriate guidance and support.
The workshop concluded with a call to everyone to combat this phenomenon by increasing awareness, understanding, and actively participating in offering support to those suffering from this illness.
