Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, Dean of the College of Science for Women, the Continuing Education Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics, organized a workshop titled “Phobia Disorder” in the Mathematics Department hall. The event was attended by several faculty members, college staff, and students from the department. The workshop addressed the various types of phobia, their causes, and treatment methods.
The workshop was presented by Assistant Lecturer Samaa Mohammed Izzat, Assistant Lecturer Huda Imad Al-Din Jameel, and Assistant Lecturer Fatima Ahmed Shihab.
The workshop introduced phobia, a psychological disorder affecting many individuals. Phobia is characterized by intense and excessive fear of specific objects or situations, negatively impacting daily life and social interactions.
The workshop discussed potential factors contributing to phobia development, including genetic influences, traumatic experiences, and environmental factors. The role of psychological and social factors in the development of this disorder was also highlighted.
The workshop then explained the different types of phobia, including:
– Social Phobia: The fear of social situations where an individual might experience embarrassment or criticism.
– Specific Phobia: Such as fear of heights (acrophobia), fear of animals (zoophobia), or fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia).
– Agoraphobia: The fear of open or crowded places that is difficult to escape from.
Finally, the workshop outlined treatment methods, including psychological and pharmacological interventions. Additionally, solutions for managing social phobia were discussed, such as practicing relaxation exercises and deep breathing techniques, gradual exposure to social situations, and seeking psychological support from friends, family, or professional counseling.
