Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women , Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Department of Biology Sciences, organized a workshop entitled (Identifying the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency in the human body, the most important animal and plant sources, and methods of treatment) presented by Asst. Prof. Dr. Reem Muhammad Obaid, Asst. Dr. Tafat Fadel Shahada, Asst. Dr. Abeer Muhammad Hussein.

The workshop aimed to shed light on the importance of vitamin D for the health of the body and how to prevent and treat its deficiency. This vitamin is one of the essential vitamins that play an important role in promoting bone and dental health. It also helps in strengthening the body’s immune system and contributes to regulating calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood.

The workshop addressed health problems resulting from vitamin D deficiency, such as bone and joint pain, muscle weakness, chronic fatigue, and depression.

The workshop mentioned the main reason for the deficiency of this vitamin, which is lack of exposure to sunlight, which is the main source of vitamin D formation In the body.

In addition, deficiency may occur as a result of not eating foods rich in this vitamin or due to some diseases that affect its absorption in the intestines.

There are many animal and plant sources of vitamin D. Such as fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and tuna, as well as liver, egg yolk and fortified dairy products. As for plant sources, they include mushrooms fortified with vitamin D as well as some types of fortified foods such as grains and vegetable juices.

As for treatment methods, vitamin D deficiency is diagnosed through blood tests, and if the deficiency is confirmed, appropriate doses of nutritional supplements containing vitamin D are determined, whether in the form of capsules or drops. It is also recommended to expose the skin to sunlight at appropriate times, especially early in the morning or in the afternoon, and to eat foods rich in the vitamin or fortified in addition to explaining the appropriate treatment methods to maintain bone health and the immune system.
