Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women , Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Chemistry Department, held a workshop entitled
(Chemistry, Humans and the Environment)
Presented by Professor Dr. Abbas Ali Saleh, Dr. Fadhel Ibrahim Hussein and Mr. Amer Hamid Hussein in Al-Hakim Hall and attended by a number of lecturers, students and college members.

The workshop aimed to introduce the role of chemistry and its importance on humans and the environment, especially health effects, and how to reduce the risks it causes and how to deal with chemical-based waste.

The workshop clarified the close connection between chemistry, human life and the environment, as it contributes to many vital, industrial and medical applications. Chemistry also plays a pivotal role in understanding natural interactions and analyzing environmental phenomena, in addition to developing environmentally friendly technologies, especially those related to sustainability.
The lecturers presented a number of successful experiences in countries around the world that shed light on industries and discoveries that address serious health problems such as the problem of environmental pollution caused by industrial waste, which poses a major challenge to humans, the earth and plants. For example, scientists discovered a type of bacteria that can digest plastic in plastic bottles, which contributes to getting rid of 311 million tons of plastic waste produced annually around the world. Some applications of green chemistry were also explained to reduce waste and preserve the environment. Researchers have come up with new manufacturing methods by finding a natural alternative to polymers extracted from petroleum products that are harmful to health and the environment by using polymers extracted from potatoes and grains, which in turn will enable the manufacture of natural materials that can be degraded without harming the environment.
