Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Science for Women , Professor Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, the Scientific Affairs Division, in cooperation with the Department of Chemistry, organized an awareness workshop entitled “Awareness of the Dangers of Drugs and Ways to Avoid Them”, as part of the college’s efforts to enhance awareness of the dangers of drugs and how to avoid them. The workshop was presented by Prof. Dr. Sahar Subaih Hassan, Asst. Prof. Dr. Shaima Rajab Baqer, and Head of Chemists Mona Samir Hadi.

The aim of the workshop was to raise awareness about various narcotic substances and their negative impact on human health. The main reasons that drive individuals to addiction to these substances were also highlighted. The workshop discussed in detail the health damage caused by drugs, such as the negative effects on brain and nervous system functions, as well as the increased likelihood of developing chronic diseases such as heart and liver diseases, in addition to their devastating psychological and social effects on individuals and their families.
The workshop also addressed the reasons that lead some people to fall into the clutches of addiction, noting that many psychological factors, such as social and economic pressure, as well as the presence of some family problems, may be among the main stimuli that lead to drug abuse.

In this context, the role of the family and society in preventing this scourge was emphasized, and how to build a healthy environment that supports individuals in facing psychological and social challenges.

The workshop also focused on the economic and social effects of drugs, as the negative effects on the national economy as a result of addiction were reviewed, such as increased health care and treatment costs, as well as the social burdens resulting from the destruction of family relationships and the loss of the ability to produce. In addition, the role of educational institutions in combating this scourge was addressed, and the importance of providing ongoing awareness programs for female students about the risks associated with drugs and ways to avoid them.

At the end of the workshop, a number of solutions and treatments were presented that could contribute to reducing the spread of drugs in society. Among these solutions, the need to intensify awareness programs in schools and universities was emphasized, and to work on providing psychological and social support to people suffering from psychological problems that may lead them to addiction was emphasized. It was also recommended to activate the role of the media in spreading awareness of the dangers of drugs, in addition to enhancing cooperation between governmental and non-governmental institutions to provide prevention and treatment programs for addiction. The workshop achieved its goals in enhancing awareness and education about the dangers of drugs and ways to avoid them, and the participants interacted positively, stressing the importance of such events in raising awareness and protecting society from this dangerous phenomenon.
