Under the patronage of Dr. Sameera Naji Khdim, Dean of the College of Science for Women, the Scientific Affairs Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science, held a workshop titled “Challenges and Benefits of Smart Cities,” presented by Dr. Ahmad Abdul-A’imah Abdul-Rida and Dr. Safa Sami Abdul-Jabbar.
The workshop aimed to highlight the numerous benefits that smart cities offer in improving the quality of life and providing innovative services to citizens, as well as increasing resource efficiency. It also addressed the role of artificial intelligence and remote control devices in enhancing traffic systems, boosting energy sustainability, and reducing environmental pollution.
Regarding the challenges, participants discussed important issues, most notably personal data protection, and the financial difficulties that may hinder the implementation of smart city projects. The need for cooperation between governments and the private sector was emphasized to overcome these challenges and ensure the success of these solutions.
The workshop emphasized that despite the significant challenges faced, smart cities represent a pivotal step toward improving urban life. However, they require meticulous planning and continuous collaboration between various parties. It was also emphasized that the use of digital solutions and advanced technology can significantly contribute to achieving sustainable development goals, particularly the 11th goal related to “Sustainable Cities and Communities.”
