Under the patronage of Dr. Samira Naji Kazem, the Dean of the College of Science for Women, the Department of Chemistry organized a workshop titled “The Role of Chemical Industries in Economic Development,” presented by Prof. Nasser Diya Shalaan and Assoc. Prof. Ahmed Younis Abdul.

The goal of the workshop was to shed light on the crucial role of chemical industries in economic development, as they are one of the main pillars of countries’ economies. These industries play a significant role in improving productivity and fostering innovation across various sectors. They contribute to transforming raw materials into high-value products, leading to job creation and increased revenues.

Among the major contributions of chemical industries to economic development are enhancing local manufacturing and developing other downstream industries such as plastics, fertilizers, and pharmaceuticals. This, in turn, boosts local production, reduces dependence on imports, and creates diverse employment opportunities in areas such as research and development, production, and maintenance. These industries also contribute to reducing unemployment rates and achieving economic diversification by supporting other sectors like food, pharmaceuticals, and energy. Furthermore, chemical industries contribute to increasing exports by developing high-quality chemical products that can be exported to global markets, thus strengthening the national economy in many countries.
